How to read a rank
A chart position is a relative measurement, and that changes what it can tell you. Your rank can improve on a day your downloads fall, because the apps around you fell further. It can worsen on a record day, because a large launch landed above you.
The scale is also not linear. The download gap between #1 and #10 is enormous; between #150 and #160 it is often a rounding error. Moving from 200 to 150 might be a handful of downloads.
Use rank as a visibility signal — how discoverable you are right now — and pair it with your own download numbers to know whether a move was you or them.
Common questions
- How often do App Store charts update?
- Apple recalculates the charts several times a day rather than once. A position checked in the morning can differ by the afternoon without your downloads changing at all.
- Why is my app ranked in one country but not another?
- Charts are calculated per storefront. An app can be in the top ten in one country and outside the top 100 in another on the same day, because it is being ranked against a different set of competitors.
- What does “not in the top 100” mean?
- Apple’s public feed publishes the top 100 only. Outside that, the feed cannot distinguish position 101 from position 5,000 — it simply does not contain the app.
- Is this the same as the category chart?
- No. This checks the overall Top Free and Top Paid charts for a storefront. Category charts are separate, and an app frequently ranks well in its category while sitting far down the overall chart.
